A white-hat hacker has played a pivotal role in assisting the creators of Hong Coin by identifying and exploiting a vulnerability in a smart contract's admin function. This flaw, which persisted for nearly a decade, allowed the hacker to initiate a refund process for investors who had lost their funds during the initial coin offering (ICO).
Thanks to this intervention, a total of $2 million has been successfully recovered for those affected. The incident highlights the importance of security auditing in cryptocurrency projects and serves as a reminder of the potential for ethical hackers to rectify past mistakes in blockchain technology.
