Although the game is currently playable, it remains in early access as development progresses. Founder Chris Roberts announced that the standalone single-player experience, Squadron 42, is targeting a release in 2026, with hopes for a complete Star Citizen 1.0 version to follow shortly after.
Despite the substantial backing, the project has faced controversy, including refunds and legal issues over its game engine. Nevertheless, Roberts appreciates the unique opportunity to realize his creative vision with ample funding and time.
