Earth's atmosphere, rich in oxygen, developed over billions of years, creating a habitat suitable for animal life. Recent research led by Wei Shi from Chengdu University of Technology proposes that the subduction of tectonic plates may have significantly influenced the timing of these oxygen increases.

This study indicates that the interaction between life, specifically photosynthetic organisms, and the chemistry of Earth’s interior contributed to oxygen levels rising over time. Such geological processes, including how tectonic plates descend into the planet's interior, appear to align with historical fluctuations in atmospheric oxygen.
