During NASA’s Artemis II mission, astronauts observed light flashes from meteoroid impacts on the Moon while volunteers participating in the Impact Flash project recorded their own observations using telescopes. These contributions are vital for analyzing the nature and origins of these meteoroids.
Project lead Ben Fernando expressed gratitude for public involvement, emphasizing that combined terrestrial and space observations will enhance our understanding of the Moon's impact rate. The initiative encourages telescope owners to submit their findings to assist with ongoing research into lunar impacts and their relation to potential moonquakes.
As the project evolves, submitted data will be used to deploy seismometers on the Moon, allowing scientists to better understand the geological activity beneath its surface, ultimately shedding light on the Moon's composition.
