Illinois Enacts Strong AI Regulation Law
- Illinois passes a groundbreaking AI safety law
- Major AI firms must submit public safety plans
- Employees can report safety risks under whistleblower protections
In a significant move for artificial intelligence regulation, Illinois lawmakers have passed SB 315, which could become the nation's strictest law for AI safety. This legislation mandates that leading AI companies submit detailed public safety plans, alongside annual reports of independent safety tests for their advanced models.
If signed by Governor J.B. Pritzker, the bill will require firms to notify the state of any critical safety incidents within 72 hours, or 24 hours if there is an imminent risk of serious harm. Furthermore, protections will be offered under the state's whistleblower laws to employees who report potential safety risks, fostering accountability in the tech industry.
Pritzker has expressed his commitment to holding Big Tech accountable through this landmark legislation.
