The geopolitical landscape of space is changing as major powers intensify their presence in geosynchronous orbit (GEO). For over a decade, the US military has utilized a fleet of inspector satellites to closely monitor activities of other spacecraft at this strategic altitude. Following suit, China initiated its own satellite missions in 2018 to achieve similar objectives.
Recently, Russia has entered the competition with the introduction of a suspected inspector satellite in GEO, signaling an increase in orbital tensions. Meanwhile, the US Space Force is preparing to significantly expand its own reconnaissance satellite capabilities, potentially launching many more units into this crucial orbital region.
GEO, positioned approximately 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above the equator, allows satellites to remain in a fixed position relative to the Earth, making it vital for communication services.
