Funding Cuts Hinder Ebola Research Efforts
- Ebola outbreak worsens in the DRC amid funding cuts
- NIH's CREID Network was crucial for disease research
- Trump's decision halted essential support for researchers
Amid growing concerns over the escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ituri Province, essential research efforts have been stymied by recent funding cuts. These reductions were implemented by the Trump administration as part of a broader shift in priorities influenced by conspiracy theories surrounding COVID-19.
Founded in 2020 by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID) Network was designed to study viruses, including those responsible for Ebola, at key sites worldwide, particularly in Central and East Africa. The NIH invested approximately $82 million into this critical initiative, which faced a termination order last June after being labeled as unsafe and not reflective of taxpayer interests.
