Star Citizen has officially surpassed the $1 billion funding milestone, marking a significant achievement in the realm of crowdfunding for video games. This milestone emerged alongside the release of the new $5,000 Anvil Odin capital ship, which players are unable to pilot in-game at this time.
Developer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) revealed that $6,624,741 was raised in just one hour during the recent DefenseCon in-game event, pushing total funding beyond $1 billion. The Anvil Odin, described as a ‘limited vehicle concept pledge,’ is still under development and will be featured in a future update with no set release date.
While the funding has attracted significant interest, Star Citizen remains contentious, with some labeling it a scam due to ongoing questions about its launch timeline and high-priced virtual ships that often lack playable functionality.
