Ancient Fijian Island Built from Shellfish Remains

Researchers have uncovered a remarkable island off the coast of Culasawani in the Fiji archipelago, estimated to be 1,200 years old. This 3,000-square-meter landmass is predominantly constructed from the remains of edible shellfish, which may have originated from ancient meals.

In addition to the shell remains, the study notes the presence of pottery fragments, providing insight into the historical practices of the island's early inhabitants. The findings shine a light on the innovative ways ancient communities utilized available resources for both sustenance and construction.
