OpenAI Sued Over Alleged Inaction in Shooting Threat

A series of seven lawsuits filed in California accuses OpenAI of failing to act on credible threats linked to a user of ChatGPT, which they claim contributed to one of Canada's worst school shootings. The lawsuits allege that officials at OpenAI dismissed warnings from their internal safety team, which had flagged the user's account months prior as a potential risk for real-world gun violence.

Despite recommendations to alert law enforcement, OpenAI allegedly prioritized user privacy and avoided reporting the threats to authorities, who were already aware of the individual. As a result, the company reportedly reactivated the account after it was deactivated, allowing the user to continue their dangerous planning.
