Rudeness as Retaliation: New Insights

New research from Cornell University explores the dynamics of rudeness and response. It finds that retaliating with incivility can sometimes be viewed more favorably than initiating rudeness. In various scenarios, including workplace interactions and sports, participants perceived uncivil actions as more acceptable when they were reactions to disrespect rather than proactive insults.

While maintaining civility is typically the preferred response, this study highlights how context influences perceptions of behavior. Responding in kind to rudeness could be as favorable as neutral reactions, challenging traditional views on workplace etiquette and social interactions.
