Bungie Faces Uncertain Future Amid Layoffs
- Bungie is reportedly planning significant layoffs soon
- Development on Destiny 3 has been halted indefinitely
- The studio is shifting focus to new projects, like Marathon
The future of Bungie appears uncertain as reports indicate substantial layoffs are imminent. With the upcoming conclusion of development on Destiny 2, insiders suggest there are currently no plans for a Destiny 3 and that the studio is diverting its attention towards Marathon.
Following the announcement of the final content update for Destiny 2 in June, industry sources claim that Bungie's team lacks a new project to transition to. While developers are proposing various project ideas including some related to Destiny, none have yet received approval for production.
The situation is exacerbated by a cautious approach from Bungie's parent company, Sony, in light of rising hardware costs and competitive pressures. Since acquiring Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, Sony has made substantial write-offs against the studio's valuation, prompting serious restructuring within Bungie.
