NASA Seeks Competitive Bids for JPL Management
- NASA is opening bids for managing its Jet Propulsion Laboratory
- The move aims to ensure taxpayer accountability and value
- Caltech has managed JPL since the 1930s, with prior contracts awarded without competition
NASA has announced a plan to solicit competitive bids for the management of its federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California. This initiative reflects the agency's commitment to maintaining accountability and delivering value to U.S. taxpayers.
Since the 1930s, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has overseen JPL, receiving exclusive contracts since the facility transitioned to NASA in 1958. However, the expanding U.S. space economy suggests there may now be opportunities for competitive management.
By inviting bids, NASA aims to evaluate different management strategies for the FFRDC, seeking improvements in mission performance, innovation, and operational efficiency.
