Innovative Rock Use Can Reduce Cement Emissions

Cement production is responsible for approximately 8 percent of worldwide CO₂ emissions. While enhancing efficiency and adopting cleaner energy sources can help, the process of converting limestone into lime produces unavoidable CO₂ emissions. These "direct process emissions" surpass the emissions generated from the fuel combustion needed for heating kiln operations.

A recent study published in Communications Sustainability explores alternatives to this conventional method. By questioning the reliance on limestone for cement, researchers propose ways to potentially eliminate these direct process emissions.
